In the research of provenance and the lived experience of a book Joseph A. Dane has coined the term ‘Panzerization’ in reference to manuscript copies being compiled to create “complete” volumes, while disregarding the history and significance of these documents in their original form. This word is given its name from Panzer who had a copy of Bonaventura from 1484 recopied to match their description of the volume. There are many stories of these ‘improvements’ occurring due to the fact that until the mid 20th century the practice was not only common but perfectly acceptable. Collectors and librarians were more concerned with having a full collection or volume rather than conserving the manuscripts in their current form.
